The chapel of Saint Onuphrius is located in the center of Pedoulas, west of the church of the Holy Cross, and is the oldest building in the community.
Its construction dates back to the 13th century (1225), and it belongs to the type of single-aisled vaulted church with an exceptionally large apse of the altar. Although it has undergone alterations due to later renovations, the chapel remains one of the most significant monuments in the area.
From the chapel of Saint Onuphrius, valuable 13th-century icons have been preserved, such as the icon of Saint Onuphrius in a supplication type and the icon of the Ascension of Christ, depicting scenes of the Passion of Christ. These icons are displayed at the Byzantine Museum of Pedoulas and are significant pieces of the local cultural heritage.
In 2011, the church was renovated with the funding of the late shipowner Vassos Hadjioannou’s family, whose bust adorns its entrance.
The feast of Saint Onuphrius is celebrated every year on June 12.
