The chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a modern church that impresses both for its architecture and the stunning view it offers.
This church, located at the top of a hill, provides an unobstructed view of the Marathasa valley, extending all the way to the Bay of Morphou.
The construction of the church was completed in 1986, and it is a single-aisled basilica with a vaulted roof, built with concrete. The church features three entrances: one on the west, one on the south, and one on the north wall. On the outside, the walls are covered with rectangular ceramic tiles that resemble marble, giving the building an elegant and imposing appearance.
To the south of the church, in a prominent location, stands an impressive 25.3-meter-high cross. The cross, much larger than the church itself, does not have a bell tower, with the bell hanging from a concrete beam that connects the cross to the church.
Inside, the church is decorated with beautiful frescoes that cover the walls, creating a calm and spiritual atmosphere. The sanctuary is separated by a marble chancel screen, which holds portable icons.
The church is always open to pilgrims and visitors. It celebrates its feast day every year on September 14th, where in Pedoulas, according to an old tradition, the Byzantine Imperial Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated with great splendor.
