In a steep yet prominent location above the historic gymnasium of Pedoulas stands the famous centuries-old cedar. This remarkable tree is a living monument of nature and has been a landmark for many decades.

Belonging to the Cedrus brevifolia family, it is officially protected by the Department of Forests. Its trunk circumference at a height of 1.30 meters is 2.60 meters, and its height reaches approximately 20 meters.

It is estimated to be around 500 years old!

"Natural Monument" trees are those of great age that have survived through the centuries, intertwining their existence with many significant historical events. Given this, along with the respect shown for their protection by generations before us, we recognize our duty to preserve and safeguard them as part of our natural and cultural heritage.

The selection of specific trees for designation as "Natural Monuments" is based on criteria such as age, size, species, and their scientific, historical, cultural, ecological, religious, or other significance. Once selected, these trees are declared "Natural Monuments" and maintained as part of the Department of Forests’ conservation and protection program for ancient trees.

Those located within forest land are protected under the Forest Law, while those outside State Forests are designated as protected by the Department of Town Planning and Housing, in accordance with Article 39 of the Town and Spatial Planning Law, always in collaboration with the Department of Forests.

By the end of 2017, 98 individual trees and 23 groups of trees outside State Forests had been declared protected, while within State Forests, 68 individual trees and 2 groups of trees had been recorded.
